Christmas in the European Alps

Where better to spend Christmas than in a snowy ski resort in Europe? Imagine spending your Christmas holidays enjoying the fantastic festive atmosphere whether you’re looking for family friendly fun, sophisticated glamour or an exciting party; the European Alps has something for everyone.

Lech – Austrian Alps

As one of the most exclusive resorts in the European Alps, Lech remains true to its farming town origins despite its international reputation, with incredibly famous visitors including Princess Diana and the Dutch royal family. The modest altitude of 1,450 metres above sea level allow the resort to receive almost twice as much snow as some the French resorts that are more well-known. The construction of the Auenfeldjet gondola in 2013 means that visitors can now use over 180km of ski slopes that include neighbouring resorts such as Zurs and Warth-Schroken. There are a range of ungroomed terrain with some great challenging trails for skiers to try. For apres-ski, you can party into the early hours in some sensational bars.

Courchevel – French Alps

As part of one of the world’s largest ski areas, the Trois Vallees (3 Valleys), Courchevel is a fantastic way to clock up your ski miles. With over 600m worth of snowy pistes and 170 lifts, you’ll find a slope to suit your ability. Most of Courchevel’s slopes are north-facing meaning they usually get the best snow coverage. Each village is linked by a frequent bus service as well as the lifts and pistes where you can enjoy the picturesque woodland surroundings. Courchevel 1850 is the highest of the villages and by far the biggest resort. Here you will find the main lift hub. For non-skiers or for when you want a break from the slopes, Courchevel has an Aquamotion centre based in Moriond with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, saunas, steam rooms, a hot tub, surfing and a climbing wall for all kinds of entertainment and relaxation. Courchevel 1850 have a beautiful ice rink as well as a fitness centre to enjoy.

Zermatt – Swiss Alps

Switzerland’s most famous ski resort enjoys breath-taking views of the Matterhorn, arguably the world’s most photogenic mountain. The festive season brings some truly magical sights including horse-drawn sleighs and pretty Christmas markets. Snow-sure slopes are ready from late-November with long, scenic runs as well as challenging slopes and easier accessible pistes for beginners. Outstanding mountain restaurants and high-altitude stations present immaculate views and delicious cuisine in the most spectacular of settings. There are 3 lift stations that can access all parts of the resort as it’s car-free. You can heli-ski in Zermatt as well as experience the Gravity Park which is among the best in Europe.

Chamonix – French Alps

Perfect for skiers and non-skiers alike, Chamonix benefits from luxurious shopping opportunities, delicious fine cuisine and indulgent pampering sessions. You can see the resort from an entirely different perspective with helicopter rides or zoom across the snow with highly-trained husky sledge rides. Nestled next to Mont Blanc, Chamonix boasts awe-inspiring views of the mountains and some of the most thrilling skiing around. Off-piste skiing and kindergartens for children provide a range of different activities for all abilities.

St Moritz – Swiss Alps

With glorious sunshine for nearly 320 days of the year, St Moritz is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the European Alps. Due to the high altitude, you’ll find snow coverage pre-season as well as after. You’ll find the best powder snow on the slopes on the Engadine ski slopes surrounding the St Moritz resort. St Moritz is the most alive in the famous shopping street of Via Serlas filled horse-drawn carriages and stunning Christmas markets.

Megeve – French Alps

With glittering boutiques, incredible restaurants and stunning hotels, Megeve is known as the French Alps version of St Moritz. Ancient cobbled streets and the annual Swarovski Christmas tree make Megeve an absolute winter wonderland during the festive period. The resort is home to several Michelin-star restaurants (one having won 3 of the prestigious awards!) and some of the Alps’ finest spas, you are guaranteed to be relaxed, wined and dined to perfection.
